US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Rising Tensions: Full Support for Israel’s Defense
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that while he does not want to see an escalation of tensions along Israel’s northern border, he fully supports Israel’s right to defend its citizens and will ensure that Israel can protect its people.
During a news conference in Tokyo on Sunday, Blinken emphasized that it is clear the US does not want to see any increase in tensions or a spread of conflict in the region.
Following the attack in the occupied Golan Heights, the US has dismissed the possibility of a full-scale war but acknowledged that Israel may respond to the assault. The US is actively working to keep the situation under control by coordinating with Israeli and Lebanese officials. The US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, and the US Army Chief have also spoken with their Israeli counterparts.
Two days prior, an explosion in the occupied Golan Heights resulted in the deaths of 12 Israelis. Both Israel and the US have attributed the attack to Hezbollah, although Hezbollah has denied involvement. Subsequently, Hezbollah and Lebanon have called for an international investigation into the Golan attack.
In response to the heightened regional tensions, the UN Secretary-General has appealed for restraint from all parties.
