Overcrowded British prisons.

A foreign news source reports that the UK’s Labour government would begin the process of early prisoner release in September in order to make room for more detainees.

The jails in England and Wales can only accommodate 700 extra male inmates; these spaces will probably be taken up within the next few weeks. Following that, detentions will have to take place at police stations, which might mean fewer officers patrolling the streets.

Inmates who have completed 40% of their sentences will be released as part of the government’s aim to open up jail space.
Starting in September, some 5,500 prisoners will be released from prison. This leniency will not help prisoners guilty of violent or sexual offenses.

Shabana Mahmood, Britain’s Minister of Justice, warned that the criminal justice system could collapse if the problem of overcrowding in jails is not resolved immediately. After 18 months, the plan will be reassessed, she said.
